Deciding where to volunteer is never easy. With so many countries and programs to choose from, it can feel overwhelming. But let me share with you why Making a difference in Uganda stands out, and why so many volunteers have chosen to work with with us since our founding in 2017.
MDU was founded by Beth Haley, a passionate volunteer who fell in love with Uganda during her travels. As Beth puts it, "I had been volunteering for many years; however, Uganda was nothing like anything I had ever experienced." Inspired by the resilience and warmth of the people she met, Beth started MDU to create sustainable change and give others the opportunity to experience the same connection she felt.
Why Volunteers Choose MDU.
I've asked several of our past volunteers why they chose MDU, and the answers were both inspiring and humbling:
Authenticity: Many saw that the work we do is real and impactful through our social media platforms.
Recommendations: Previous volunteers shared their incredible experiences, encouraging others to join us.
A calling: Some said they felt an undeniable pull to volunteer with MDU after learning about our mission.
Affordability: Many volunteers said our programs were cheaper compared to other organizations.
Medical Outreaches: Some volunteers said they loved how we go to people's door steps delivering health care which is different from the hospital setting which they are usually exposed to.
A community of change: Volunteers loved how they could directly see the difference they are making and felt part of the something bigger.
After their volunteering period, many expressed how hard it was to leave.
One volunteer, Engy, was so moved that all she could say was "I am happy I am here."
Katie said "I feel so sad I have to go back"
The Impact of Volunteering with MDU.
MDU isn't just a program; it's a life changing experience for both the volunteers and the communities we serve. Let me give you an example from one of our medical outreaches.
This year 2024 we treated 14,057 people in total of acute illnesses, 2,536 people were tested positive and were treated for malaria aa disease that claims thousands of lives annually in Uganda. During one of our outreaches, a severely ill child was brought to us. He was lethargic, un able to eat or even drink anything. Beth rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he received life saving IV treatment. I have attached a photo below. That child is now healthy and thriving.
